Welcome to the Stronger Arizona Website

This Website shows the Arizona state legislature's budget impacts on Arizona's children and middle-class families and House Democrats' common-sense solutions to balance the state's budget while protecting jobs, education and families.

Arizona's 2009-2010 Budget Impact

The areas of our state hit hardest were children and middle-class families, including cuts to education, health care, the developmentally disabled, children with life-threatening conditions, child protective services, child care and state parks. Learn about Democrats' efforts to engage in bipartisan budget talks

Democratic lawmakers have urged for bipartisan budget talks for nearly a year to solve the state's economic crisis, but Gov. Jan Brewer and Republican leadership failed to lead and refused to call all five parties — Brewer, House and Senate Democrats and Republicans — to the table to negotiate a bipartisan budget..

However, there has been a budget developed by third party economists and others that actually takes a comprehensive, long-term approach to solving our budget crisis, as opposed to the piece meal and short-sighted approaches we have seen thus far from Governor Brewer and Republican leadership.

Though the House Democrats do not necessarily agree with everything in this budget, we believe it's a start.  And, more importantly, it's an example of what Governor Brewer and the legislature should be doing:  creating a balanced, fiscally responsible budget that addresses our short and long term fiscal crises.

There is a growing group of House Republicans who are also interested in this budget, and we hope they will join us in working together to address Arizona's fiscal emergency.

Read the report from The Fiscal Alternative Choices Team (FACT)

The Fiscal Alternative Choices Team released their report about the State's budget crisis on April 2nd.  FACT found what Democrats and many others have been saying for months - we can't cut our way out of this crisis.  In fact, the report states:

"...one reality appears to rise above all others - a deficit of this magnitude cannot be eliminated through budget cuts alone.  To do so would have profound impacts on basic government services that would be felt by all Arizonans and would fundamentally transform how Arizona is perceived as a place to live, work and raise a family."  (emphasis added)
