Learn about Democrats' efforts to engage in bipartisan budget talks
Democratic lawmakers have urged for bipartisan budget talks for nearly a year to solve the state's economic crisis, but Gov. Jan Brewer and Republican leadership failed to lead and refused to call all five parties — Brewer, House and Senate Democrats and Republicans — to the table to negotiate a bipartisan budget..
However, there has been a budget developed by third party economists and others that actually takes a comprehensive, long-term approach to solving our budget crisis, as opposed to the piece meal and short-sighted approaches we have seen thus far from Governor Brewer and Republican leadership.
Though the House Democrats do not necessarily agree with everything in this budget, we believe it's a start. And, more importantly, it's an example of what Governor Brewer and the legislature should be doing: creating a balanced, fiscally responsible budget that addresses our short and long term fiscal crises.
There is a growing group of House Republicans who are also interested in this budget, and we hope they will join us in working together to address Arizona's fiscal emergency.
